Planning your Christmas Payroll

With Christmas right around the corner you will be looking forward to spending time with loved ones and having a hard-earned rest. However, before you can fully relax you need to prepare for the Christmas payroll. When planning your Christmas payroll there are a few things you need to consider, and we are here to tell you what those things are.

Payment Date Changes

As you may know both Christmas day and New Years day fall on a weekend, Saturday to be precise. This means you may need to consider bringing your normal payment day forward. Where a weekly payroll schedule is in operation, you may need to consider paying employees in advance to cover any shut down days during the festive period.

It is always a good idea to plan your Christmas payroll as far in advance as you can. This allows your payroll team time to put the necessary procedures in place and adjust the December processing timetable where necessary.

It is important to remember when submitting the Full Payment Submission (FPS) the payment date should still show the normal contractual pay date. The submission of the Employer Payroll Summary (EPS) should as per the standard timetable. You should keep in mind HMRC may impose penalties for inaccurate or late submissions.

Festive Working Hours

Ensure you don’t forget to make arrangements to pay employees who will be working during this period. It is important to notify your payroll team of who the employees will be and the arrangements that have been agreed. There are no legal requirements around working and payment over the festive period aside from those stated in an employee’s terms and conditions of employment.

Being aware of the above amongst other things can help you to plan a successful festive payroll. If you are outsourcing your payroll your provider will take care of the above, supporting you in ensuring your festive payroll runs smoothly.
